A Great Horned Owl is wrapped in a watermelon-pink towel, held between the forearm and chest of a rehabilitator wearing dark blue scrubs and light blue gloves. The owl has seen better days, missing one of his 'horn' tufts and some other head feathers, looking rather scrappy overall. His eyes are yellow tinged with green. His head is both turned and leaning slightly, oddly reminiscent of a portrait of Captain James Cook. His feathers are the shade of toasted granola with accents of cream and dark brown.

We welcomed another owl guest — a juvenile great horned owl who had fallen on very hard times before even getting started in the world. This BIG kid was found in the Bronx, emaciated, dehydrated and very weak. He’d lost one of his ear tufts and appeared to have been pecked on the head.

We treated him for potential rodenticide poisoning, a likely culprit, and provided urgent supportive care. This morning he was more stable and we’re sending him off to our excellent friends at The Raptor Trust for longer-term recovery. Thank you to TRT and to the NYC Parks rangers who rescued the owl. We truly hope this young beauty will get the chance at a long life in the wild.
